Autumn is Coming: What You Need to Check on Your Car This September

As we move from the warm days of summer into the crisp air of autumn this September, it’s a good time to give your car a thorough check-up. The shift in season brings different driving conditions, and ensuring your vehicle is ready for autumn will help you avoid any surprises on the road. Here’s a checklist of things to take note of as the temperatures start to drop.

Check Your Tyres

The summer heat can take a toll on your tyres, so as autumn approaches, inspect them carefully:

  • Tread Depth: Ensure your tyres have enough tread for grip on wet, slippery roads. The legal minimum is 1.6mm, but it’s safer to have at least 3mm to handle autumn’s rainy conditions.
  • Pressure: Tyre pressure can fluctuate with changing temperatures, so make sure they’re inflated to the correct level for better handling and fuel efficiency.
  • Sidewall Condition: Look for any cracks, bulges, or signs of wear that might have developed over the summer. If you spot damage, it’s best to replace the tyre before it becomes a problem.

Inspect Your Wipers and Washer Fluid

Autumn showers mean it’s crucial that your wipers are in good condition. Replace worn-out wiper blades to ensure a clear view in rainy conditions, and top up your washer fluid to handle dirt, mud, and debris.

Test Your Battery

The hot summer weather can strain your car’s battery, and as cooler temperatures set in, your battery might struggle. If it’s over three years old or you’ve noticed slow starts, consider having it tested or replaced before the colder months.

Check Your Fluids

Keeping your car’s fluids topped up is essential, especially as autumn brings wetter and colder conditions:

  • Engine Oil: Check your oil level and condition. If it’s low or dirty, an oil change will keep your engine running smoothly.
  • Coolant: Make sure your coolant level is correct to prevent your engine from overheating. Autumn may be cooler, but coolant is still essential.
  • Brake Fluid: Low brake fluid can reduce braking performance, especially in wet weather. Check and top up as needed.

Inspect the Heating System

With colder days ahead, now’s the time to check that your car’s heating system is working properly. Test your heater to ensure it’s providing enough warmth and defogging power when you need it.

Clean Your Car Inside and Out

Autumn often brings mud, leaves, and debris, so it’s a good idea to clean your car thoroughly. Wash off any summer grime to protect the paint and give your interior a clean for better visibility and comfort.

Review Your MOT and Service Schedule

As you prepare for the new season, take a moment to check when your next MOT and service are due. Keeping these up to date is essential for both safety and compliance.
